Helen Sutton

Picture
I retired from medicine in 1993 and was lucky enough to become a painter/printmaker.

As both doctor and artist I am inspired by people their lives, environments, memories and traces.

A practice central to both artists and scientists is looking at things and trying to make sense of the world and our place in it. Scientific studies show that we simultaneously perceive abstract patterns and form concepts about them. This is similar to the way artists work.

Both language and art is dependant on metaphor - as Paul Klee said “art does not represent the visual world, it makes things visible”. Through visual narrative and metaphor I try to resolve some of the complexities of medicine, making it easier to understand and hopefully more compassionate. Many of my paintings and prints are inspired by my Greek background Darwin’s ideas, and genetics.
