Simmi Whish

I have always drawn and painted and I had great encouragement from art teachers at school
Picture
where I painted murals and theatre back cloths leading to continued enjoyment of painting
them all my life.
For various reasons I was unable to take up a scholarship for the Slade Art school in 1959
and places at .Chelsea and Wimbledon art schools in the 60s.

However I finally completed a 4yr Sculpture course at Southampton School of Art in 1979 .

The  influence for understanding how to  move from 2D to3D in sculpture was reading the life story
of the American artist David Smith.

“I laid my picture on the ground and let my sculpture grow upwards from it .” ( David Smith)

Over the years I have completed commissions for murals in Portugal and hospitals in the U.K.
Picture
I have also designed and painted sets for pantomimes and primary school plays.
Picture
I worked with small groups of children on canvases to hang around the school , and painted murals of illustrations on school library walls  .

In painting  my influences are; Cezanne, Giotto. Mediaeval art, Freda Kahlo , David  Hockney and the surrealists.
Picture
I also enjoy painting colourful furniture.
I started to paint furniture from observing this craft in India .
Colour is my first love. my paintings are informed by extensive travelling and visiting galleries.
Picture
Each summer I paint seascapes in the Scilly isles in small rented cabin.

In Malaya in a remote jungle we met a hunter gather tribe who had returned to the river briefly to fish, I met the young woman and girls as they sat in their temporary homes carving patterns bamboo combs to wear in there tightly curled hair. They were very shy…. the next day they were gone again, melting into the jungle for another day .
I felt full of nostalgia for my long lost daughter .

By travelling I, have seen many moving and amazing scenes
One night in the Himalayas I watched a small young girl hoisting a large crying baby on her back.
She sang a song rocking him to comfort, her little voice reverberating across the enormous
expanse of mountains clear and full of spirit .
We trekked for six weeks in the mountains . People  lived in small remote communities their lives on a tight rope. Whether in jungles, street markets, temples or mountains , memories and colour….. all this informs my work.

I am drawn to paint still life because the objects and forms challenge me to look and draw concentrating on detail, which in turn disciplines my practice. It calms me yet excites me to play with the shapes and colour .
I enjoy painting still life subjects and derive great pleasure in shapes, reflections and delicious
colours of oil and acrylic. These are my go to subjects.

The picture’ looking back ‘ is full of objects from my childhood to maturity over periods of my life..
I also use birds to depict flight and freedom ,disrupting and leaving the still life to continue.
The use of scarves and materials enhance  the intricacies of pattern in the paintings.
All my still life painting s contain objects with emotional content ,memories of colourful travels or people close to me .

This is my husband, Kingsley birdwatching on the island of Samson. I have spent a life time reading on beaches and watching him beside me against the sky, beautiful.
This portrait of Kingsley was shown in the National Library of Wales for a portrait of
the year competition.
At present I am painting each grandchild at 16 yrs old, a cusp of life series.
I have enjoyed painting my family.
Picture
Recently, however, I am working on tonal pictures in pen and ink , pencil  and in oil
and acrylic, and making wall sculptures again
Picture
This wall sculpture was made for an open commission .After a very hard time for the  owner ,she was starting to re-enter her life again; being a colourful person,I created this work  for her called “All the worlds a stage and we mere players upon it “.

I work quite eclectically, images crowd my brain and I become quite anxious.
I have to take time out to work or I will burst. I have to be disciplined, which is often difficult.
My personal view of painting is to paint with feeling instinct and integrity.
The paintings I produce prove I exist.
